Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted July 6, 1861 from Philadelphia, in Company D, 28th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the shoulder, and was later awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in capturing a Confederate flag at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted to Sergeant, 8 December 1862; wounded at Chancellorsville, 3 May 1863; discharged 6 July 1864 - end of 3 year term of service.
