Before the Antietam Campaign:
He commanded Company H, 6th North Carolina Infantry in Maryland.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was posted with his Company (and Capt. Clayton's of the 2nd Mississippi) on the Hagerstown Pike near the D.R. Miller farm on the afternoon of 16 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was captured in action at Gettysburg in July 1863 and imprisoned at Johnson's Island, probably to the end of the War.

After the War:
He farmed in Caswell County, NC. He was serving as County Treasurer in 1910.
