Before the Antietam Campaign:
Born in Germany, he was a New Orleans resident when he enlisted in Company K, 15th Louisiana Infantry on 25 March 1862 at age 21.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was in hospital from February to June 1863. He was killed in action on 2 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA.
