Confederate (CSV)

Lieutenant Colonel

Nathaniel G. Offutt

(c. 1831 - ?)

Home State: Louisiana

Command Billet: Regimental Lt Colonel

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 6th Louisiana Infantry

Before Sharpsburg

He was a 30 year old planter in St. Landry Parish when he enrolled as Captain, Company C, 6th Louisiana Infantry on 4 June 1861 at Camp Moore, LA. He was appointed Major of the Regiment on 25 May 1862 and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 27 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was next senior man, and would have assumed command of the Regiment on Colonel Strong's death in action on 17 September. It is likely, however, that he was not present at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He may have been promoted Colonel to date from 17 September 1862, but resigned his commission 7 November 1862. He was reportedly under a charge of cowardice.
