Before the Antietam Campaign:
Possibly from St. Landry Parish, he was appointed Major of the 6th Louisiana Infantry 25 May 1862 and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 27 June 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was next senior man, and would have assumed command of the Regiment on Colonel Strong's death in action on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
He was made Colonel to date from 17 September 1862, but resigned his commission 7 November 1862.
