Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at 17 years old, at Trenton, on 9 August 1861.

The remainder of the War:
He was later awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery in manning an artillery piece under fire at Spotsylvania Courthouse (Va) on 12 May 1864. He was discharged as Sergeant, Company B, 9 July 1865.
