Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted and was 1st Sergeant, Company H - the "Pool Volunteers" of Hart County, Georgia - on 15 July 1861. He was elected 1st Lieutenant on 29 February and Captain 25 April 1862 .

In the Antietam Campaign:
He relieved the mortally wounded Colonel Millican late in the day on 17 September in command of the regiment. He was the senior surviving officer present.

The remainder of the War:
He was captured in action at Fort Harrison, Va. on 29 September 1864, and released 17 June 1865 at War's end.
