Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at Buffalo on 21 August, at age 18, and mustered into Company D of the 49th Infantry as Sergeant.1

The remainder of the War:
He was reduced to the ranks on 18 November 1862, was promoted to Corporal on 2 January 1863, and sergeant again, immediately following heroic action at Salem Church in May 1863. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 16 October 1863, and was killed in action in The Wilderness on 10 May 1864. In 1870 he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Salem Chuch.1
