Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Franklin County, Virginia he's found in the 1850 US Census at age 10, living on his father's farm. He was in militia service there for 3 months in 1861, then was Captain, Company D of the 2nd Cavalry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He commanded the Sharpshooters of the Regiment and was conspicuous at Poolsville (8-9 Sept), then at Burkittsville and on to Crampton's Gap (12-14 Sept)1.

The remainder of the War:
He reportedly died of wounds in June 1864.
