A medical doctor in Westmoreland County, he mustered into service as First Lieutenant of Company K, 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry on 9 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was acting Adjutant of the regiment when he was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862 and he died the next day.
