Before Antietam
After West Point, he was made one of the original officers of the US Army Corps of Topographic Engineers, created in 1838.He was promoted to Captain in 1853, but he was dismissed June 4, 1856 (why?).
He was appointed Colonel of the 23rd Ohio Infantry in June 1861.
On the Campaign
Commanded the First Brigade/Kanawha Division in Cox's Ninth (IX) Corps and relieved BGen Cox in command of the Division.
The rest of the War
He was appointed BGen of Volunteers in October 1862, and was honorably mustered out in August 1865.
