Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted as Private in Company A, 16th Georgia Infantry on 11 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 15 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
Exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA on 10 November 1862. Furloughed for 20 days on account of sickness, 22 November 1862. Discharged, furnished John Lester as substitute in March 1863.
