Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company B, 16th Georgia Infantry as First Corporal on 17 July 1861, and was appointed First Sergeant.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was elected Second Lieutenant on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted to First Lieutenant later in 1862. Captured at Deep Bottom, VA 21 August 1864. Released at Fort Delaware, DE 17 June 1865.
