He enlisted as Private in Company B, 16th Georgia Infantry on 17 July 1861, later appointed Sergeant.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
Sent from Fort Delaware, Delaware to Aikenís Landing, Virginia October 2, 1862, and exchanged there November 10, 1862. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia May 3, 1863.Died, result of amputation of left arm, in Receiving & Wayside Hospital at Richmond, Virginia May 10, 1863.
