Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted as Private in Company B, 16th Georgia Infantry on 17 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
Sent from Fort Delaware, Delaware to Aiken's Landing, Virginia for exchange October 2, 1862. Exchanged there November 10, 1862. Transferred to Company C, 3rd Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters June 8, 1863. Wounded in 1863. Admitted to General Hospital at Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia, on account wounds, July 16, 1863. Furloughed for 30 days July 30, 1863. Deserted at Petersburg, Virginia July 17, 1864.
