Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted as Private in Company B, 16th Georgia Infantry on 17 July 1861. Appointed 2d Sergeant. He was slightly wounded in the arm at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
Sent from Fort Delaware, Delaware to Aiken's Landing, Virginia October 2, 1862. Exchanged there November 10, 1862. Transferred to Company C, 3rd Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters June 8, 1863. Captured at High Bridge, Virginia April 6, 1865. Released at Point Lookout, Maryland June 21, 1865.
