He enlisted as Private in Company C, 16th Georgia Infantry on 13 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
Exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Virginia November 10, 1862. Captured at Knoxville, Tennessee November 1863. Admitted to Camp Nelson, Kentucky Convalescent Hospital December 26, 1863, and died there of pneumonia January 2, 1864.
