Before the Antietam Campaign:
A teacher, he enlisted as Private in Company C, 16th Georgia Infantry on 13 July 1861. Appointed Corporal.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the wrist and captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
Exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Virginia November 10, 1862. Roll for November 30, 1862, shows him absent on 60 days furlough at Hartwell, Georgia. No later record.
