Before the Antietam Campaign:
A farmer, he enlisted as 2nd Sergeant in Company D, 16th Georgia Infantry on 5 August 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
Sent to Fort Delaware, DE. Paroled 26 September 1862. Exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA on 10 November 1862. Surrendered, Appomattox, VA on 9 April 1865.
