Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted as 3rd Corporal in Company E, 16th Georgia Infantry on 24 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded and captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
Paroled September 26, 1862. Wounded in left arm at Chancellorsville, Virginia May 3, 1863. Retired in 1864. Roll dated January 30, 1865, last on file, shows he was assigned to light duty. Captured and paroled at Hartwell, Georgia May 17, 1865.
