Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Company F, 16th Georgia Infantry on 19 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded again, in the eye, resulting in loss of sight, at Fredericksburg, VA 13 December 1862. Captured at Cold Harbor, VA on 1 June1864. Released at Fort Delaware, DE 17 June 1865.
