From Jackson County, GA, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company G, 16th Georgia Infantry on 20 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
Transferred from Fort Delaware, DE to Aiken's Landing, VA on 2 October 1862, where he was exchanged 10 November. Killed at Chancellorsville, VA on 8 May 1863.
