He enlisted as 2nd Corporal, Company G, 16th Georgia Infantry on 20 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was captured in action on 25 September 1862 at Burkittsville, MD.

The remainder of the War:
Exchanged at City Point, VA Dec. 4, 1862. Wounded at Chancellorsville, VA May 3, 1863. Transferred to Co. H, 16th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and elected 2d Lieutenant Sept. 19, 1863; to Co. H, 18th G Cavalry May 2, 1864. Captured at Fisher's Hill, VA Sept. 22, 1864. Released at Fort Delaware, DE June 17, 1865.
