Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted as Private, Company I, 16th Georgia Infantry on 16 July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded and captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
His right leg was amputated in 1862. He was exchanged in November and discharged for disability, at Petersburg, VA 14 December 1862.
