Age 28, from Cleveland County, NC, he enlisted there on 11 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, 15th North Carolina Infantry. He was sick in North Carolina in April and May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on 14 September 1862 on South Mountain.

The rest of the War

His father Thomas filed a claim for his final pay of $99.13 in January 1863; it was probably paid in November 1864.
