From Catawba County, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company I, 49th North Carolina Infantry on 19 March 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to First Lieutenant to date from 1 February 1863.
