From Catawba County, he enlisted in Company I, 49th North Carolina Infantry on 19 March 1862. He was wounded in action at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded again, in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
