Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was commissioned Second Lieutenant, Company C, 23rd Georgia Infantry on 31 August 1861, then appointed Sergeant Major.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Elected Captain of Company C, 23rd Regiment Georgia Infantry on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded at Bentonville, NC 18 March 1865. Admitted to CSA General Hospital #11 at Charlotte, NC with a wound in his lower right extremity, on 20 March 1865. Pension records show he was at home on wounded furlough close of war.
