Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted as Private in Company F, 23rd Georgia Infantry on 31 August 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
Appointed 5th Sergeant in 1863. Wounded at Ocean Pond, FL 20 February 1864. Appointed 1st Sergeant 1 April 1864. Roll for 30 April 1864, last on file, shows him present. Pension records show he surrendered at Greensboro, NC 26 April 1865.
