Before the Antietam Campaign:
At age 32 he enrolled in the Fourth New York Volunteer Infantry on 22 April 1861 in New York City to serve two years. He was appointed First Lieutenant, Company G, on 25 April 1861 (mustered 7 May), and Captain, Company B, 26 May 1861 when Captain Samuel S. May resigned.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action on 17 September at Antietam.
