Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted as Private in Company F, 23rd Georgia Infantry on 31 August 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the right leg and left arm in action on 14 September 1862 at Crampton's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
Captured at Chancellorsville,VA 3 May 1863. Exchanged at City Point,VA 23 May. Roll for 30 April 1864, last on file, shows him present. Pension records show he was twelve miles from Greensboro, NC April 26, 1865 at the surrender. Paroled at Cowpens, SC in 1865.
