He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

Captured at Chancellorsville, VA 3 May 1863. Exchanged at City Point, VA 23 May 23. Wounded at Ocean Pond, FL 20 February 1864. Cut off from command while home on wounded furlough. Enlisted in Company I, 1st Georgia Cavalry on 20 August 1864. Surrendered at Charlotte, NC 3 May 1865.
