Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company F of the 23rd Ohio Infantry on 5 June 1861 at Columbus, Ohio. He was 22 years old.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September.
