Before the Antietam Campaign:
Son of New York State Representative Gideon Hotchkiss, he enlisted October 3, 1861, at Windsor, to serve three years; mustered in as Private, Co. G, October 16, 1861; promoted Commissary-Sergeant, December 6, 1861; returned to ranks as private, Go. G, June 10, 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged for disability from typhoid fever October 3, 1862 at Sharpsburg, MD.

After the War:
He never married and died at the New York State Soldiers and Sailors Home, Bath, Steuben County, NY.
