He enlisted in Company D, 2nd Delaware Infantry as 5th Sergeant. By Antietam he was Orderly or First Sergeant.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was cited in Captain Stricker's after-action report: "Among the enlisted men I may favorably mention: Company D, First Sergt. John L. Ogden (killed)..."
