Before the Antietam Campaign: He enlisted in Company I of the 16th Infantry in May 1861 and was appointed First Sergeant of the Company. He was promoted Captain and took command in April 1862. The remainder of the War: He was killed in action at Fredericksburg on 13 December 1862, and buried on the field.
