Age 34 years. Enlisted July 31, 1861 at New York City; mustered in as Private, Company B on August 15 to serve two years. He was promoted Corporal on January 1, 1862 and Sergeant, May 1.

On the Campaign

In his after-action report, Colonel Kimball said "I cannot close this report without calling your special attention to ... Sergeants Dews, Whitney (wounded), and Schmidt; Corporals Farrell (wounded) Cornell and Roberts, Company B..."

The rest of the War

He was appointed First Sergeant on November 24, 1862. He transferred to Company A, Third Infantry, May 6, 1863 and was discharged, July 31, 1863.
