Before the Antietam Campaign:
Age 24 years. Enlisted April 23, 1861 at New York City; mustered in as Private, Company E, May 4, 1861, to serve two year. Probably promoted to Sergeant before Antietam.

In the Antietam Campaign:
In his after-action report, Colonel Kimball said "I cannot close this report without calling your special attention to ... Sergeants Smith, Hankinson, Jackson and Keating (the latter both wounded), Company E ..."

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted First Sergeant on November 21, 1862 and mustered out with his company May 20, 1863 in New York City.
