Before the Antietam Campaign:
Age 29 years. Enlisted April 23, 1861 at New York City; mustered in as Sergeant, Company E on May 4, 1861 to serve two years.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He mustered as Second Lieutenant, Company C to date from October 22,1862, and mustered out with his Company on May 20, 1863. He had been commissioned Second Lieutenant on October 20,1862, with rank from September 17, 1862, vice Cooper, killed in action.
