Before Antietam

Age 18 years, he enlisted 20 August 1861 at New York City and mustered in as Private, Company E, 9th New York Infantry on the same date, to serve two years.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Locust Spring filed hospital near Keedsyville, MD, where he assisted with other patients, notably Private G.W. Ard of the 2nd Georgia Infantry. He was discharged for disability on 17 February 1863 at Convalescent Camp, Alexandria, VA.
