A farmer, he enlisted in the Randolph Rangers, Company G of the 46th Infantry, on 26 March 1862, from Stokes County.

In the Antietam Campaign:
On the muster roll as present with his Company in September and October 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was killed in action on 3 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA.
