Enlisted at age 20, from Spartanburg District in Company K, Third Infantry on 14 April 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

Promoted Corporal before October 1862. Appointed 5th Sergeant 27 January 1863, and to 3rd Sergeant by the end of 1863. Wounded again in the Wilderness, VA in May 1864. Transferred to Company D in 1865, and paroled at Greensboro, NC in 1865.
