Before the Antietam Campaign:
A printer from Boston, he enlisted at age 18 in Company A of the 12th Massachusetts Infantry on 20 April 1861, and mustered into Federal Service in on 26 June.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged on 7 February 1863 for disability from his wound.
