Before the Antietam Campaign:
Living in Dayton, Maine and working as a moulder before the War, he enlisted in Company A of the 12th Massachusetts Infantry on 6 July 1861. He was promoted to Corporal prior to the Maryland Campaign.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September.
