Before the Antietam Campaign:
A 20 year old farmer in North Bridgewater, he enlisted as Private in Company A of the 12th Massachusetts Infantry on 25 June 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
He transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on 1 October 1863, and mustered out of the 89th Company, 2nd Battalion VRC on 27 June 1864 a the expiration of his three-year term of service.
