Before Antietam

He was raised in Cleveland, OH, and worked in a rolling mill. He enlisted on 17 April 1861 in the 7th Infantry (3 months), Company A, and was appointed Corporal. He reenlisted in the same company, 7th Ohio (3 years) as Corporal on 19 June 1861 giving his age as 25. He was promoted to Sergeant, date unknown. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, Company D on 13 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was present for action at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to First Lieutenant, Company E on 2 November 1862 and Captain, Company C on 19 February 1864. He was captured in action at Dallas, GA on 25 May 1864and was imprisoned in Charleston, SC. He was discharged 19 December 1864. He was later appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 187th Ohio Infantry, which served in Georgia from March 1865 to January 1866.
