A resident of Wakefield, he enlisted at age 16 in Company H, 5th New Hampshire Infantry on 19 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He re-enlisted 15 February 1864. He was again wounded, in action at Cold Harbor, VA, on 3 June 1864. He mustered out of service on 28 June 1865.
