Before Antietam

From Milton, he enlisted at age 20 in Company A, First New Hampshire Infantry on 29 April 1861 for 3 months. He mustered out 9 August 1861. He reenlisted, in Company D, 5th New Hampshire Infantry on 23 September 1861 and mustered as Sergeant on 23 October. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 13 April 1862. He was promoted to First Lieutenant, Company B, on 11 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Captain, Company C on 18 December 1862. He was appointed Major of the Regiment on 15 March 1865, but did not muster at that rank. He was severely wounded at Farmville, VA on 7 April 1865 and discharged on 15 May 1865.

After the War

He was honored by brevet to Major of Volunteers to date from 13 March 1865 for gallant and meritorious conduct at Reams' Station, VA.
