He enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant in Company H, 155th Pennsylvania Infantry on 22 August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
"... a faithful and deserving officer, broke down on the Antietam Campaign from fatigues and exposure, suffering very severely, and was forced to go to the hospital, and was never able to return to duty ..."

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged 20 January 1863.
