Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted as Corporal in Company I, 155th Pennsylvania Infantry on 23 August 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was "one of the youngest, and also most delicate youths in appearance .... and endured strenuous service". He was promoted to be member of the Color Guard, and mustered out with his Company on 2 June 1865.
